A2P 10DLC: what it is and why your texts do not arrive without it

The carrier registration system for business texting from standard phone numbers: what gets registered, what happens if you skip it, how long it takes, and what it costs in plain terms.

A2P 10DLC is the U.S. carriers' registration system for businesses that send texts from standard 10-digit phone numbers. "A2P" means application-to-person (a business system texting a customer, as opposed to one person texting another). "10DLC" means 10-digit long code, a normal local number. Before a business can send texts reliably from such a number, it registers its brand (who it is) and its campaign (what it sends). Unregistered traffic is filtered or blocked by the carriers, often silently.

Why it exists

Spam. Local numbers used to be an easy way to send bulk texts that looked personal, and the carriers responded by requiring anyone sending business traffic from them to identify themselves and describe the traffic. Registered senders get reliable delivery and known throughput; unregistered senders get filtered. It has been the norm since around 2021 and enforcement has tightened since.

What gets registered

The brand. Your business: legal name, EIN, address, website, contact. It is verified against public records, and the result is a trust score that sets your daily message allowance.

The campaign. What you send from the number: appointment reminders, customer replies, marketing, mixed. It includes sample messages, a description of how customers opt in, and confirmation that you handle STOP and HELP. The campaign is reviewed, and a description that does not match the samples gets rejected.

What happens if you skip it

Messages show as sent and do not arrive. Some carriers block outright; others filter a share. Your reply rates look terrible and you do not know why. Some providers will not let you send from an unregistered number at all, which is a kindness. If delivery was fine and suddenly is not, check whether a registration lapsed or a campaign was rejected on review.

How long it takes

Brand registration is usually quick when the details match public records exactly. Campaign registration involves a review that can take days to a couple of weeks, longer if the description is vague or the samples do not match. Get the legal name, EIN and address exactly right the first time; mismatches are the main cause of delay.

What it costs

There are one-time fees for brand and campaign registration and, for some campaign types, a monthly fee. They are modest for a small business. Some providers pass them through at cost; some bundle them; some mark them up. Ask.

What it does not cover

Toll-free numbers, which have their own verification process. Short codes, which are a different product. And it does not replace consent: registration tells the carriers what you send, and consent is what lets you send it to a particular person. You need both.

Doing it well

Describe what you actually send, with real sample messages. State how customers opt in, and make sure that is true. Include the STOP and HELP handling. If you send both reminders and marketing, register a mixed campaign or two campaigns rather than registering reminders and sending marketing. And keep the registration current when the business name or address changes.

Frequently asked questions

I only send a few texts a day. Do I still need it?

Yes. Registration is about the type of traffic, not the volume. Low-volume options exist for very small senders, and they are still registration.

Can my provider do it for me?

They submit it; you supply the details. A good provider walks you through it and checks the details against public records before submitting. Our 10DLC guide covers the steps.

What about WhatsApp or Instagram?

Different platforms with their own business verification. 10DLC is SMS and MMS from U.S. long codes only.

What Frontiva does here

Frontiva sends SMS through your own Twilio account today, so 10DLC registration is done in Twilio under your brand. Frontiva-provided numbers with registration handled for you are built and waiting on a carrier account; the SMS integration page says what works now. For picking the number itself, see choosing a business texting number.

Once a number is registered, the texts themselves have to land somewhere a person actually watches. In Frontiva they arrive in the unified inbox alongside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and email, so replying is one thread rather than four apps.
