Facebook Messenger for service businesses: still worth answering
Messenger is where a lot of local customers, especially older ones, send their first message. How to connect it, what the messaging window allows, what the AI should do with it, and how it fits the shared inbox.

Facebook Messenger is still a common first contact for local service businesses, particularly from customers who found the business on Facebook or through a community group. It connects through the business's Facebook Page, allows free replies within 24 hours of the customer's last message, and works with the same AI and knowledge as every other channel. It is not the most fashionable channel; it is the one a lot of your customers actually use.
Who messages on Messenger
Customers who found you in a local Facebook group ("can anyone recommend a plumber?"). Older customers who use Facebook daily and see it as the natural way to contact a business. People who clicked a Facebook ad. And anyone who landed on your Page and pressed the message button because it was there. For home services, veterinary clinics and restaurants, Messenger volume is often higher than Instagram.
Connecting it
The business's Facebook Page is connected to the messaging platform once, by a Page admin. Messages to the Page then arrive in the shared inbox and replies go out as the Page. Facebook's Page messaging has its own settings (instant replies, away messages) which should be turned off once the platform is answering, so customers do not get two replies.
The messaging window
Like Instagram, Messenger allows free-form replies within a window after the customer's last message (currently 24 hours), with limited permitted cases for messaging outside it. For anything that needs to happen later, such as a reminder for an appointment booked in the thread, ask for a mobile number and consent to text during the conversation.
What the AI should do
Answer the question from approved knowledge. Offer real slots and book in the thread. Ask for a mobile number for confirmations and reminders, with consent. Hand off complaints, clinical and legal questions, and anything the rules flag. Identify itself as the business's assistant. The same as everywhere, which is the point of one set of rules.
The recommendation thread
A lot of Messenger conversations start because someone was recommended in a group and messaged three businesses at once. The one that answers first, with something concrete ("Yes, we cover that area. What is going on, and what is your ZIP?"), gets the job. Speed matters here exactly as it does for missed calls.
Ads that open a conversation
Facebook ads can be set to open a Messenger conversation rather than send the customer to a website. Those conversations arrive in the same inbox, tagged with the ad, and the AI answers them the same way. It is a cheap way to make ad clicks into conversations rather than into forms.
In the shared inbox
A customer who messages on Facebook and later texts is one thread with one record. The front desk does not need the Facebook app; the owner does not need to be the Page admin who answers. Assignment, response time and the AI's handoffs work the same as on SMS.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Facebook's own automated replies as well?
No. Turn them off once the platform is answering, to avoid double replies and conflicting information.
Can the AI see the customer's Facebook profile?
It sees the name and profile picture the platform provides, and whatever the customer tells it. It should not, and cannot, browse their profile.
What about comments on our posts?
Public comments are separate from Messenger. Some platforms can reply to comments or invite the commenter to message; ask what is supported.
What Frontiva does here
In Frontiva, Messenger messages are received, answered by the AI from your approved knowledge, and replied to by staff in the unified inbox. A self-serve way to connect a Page is still to come, because it waits on Meta's app review; the Messenger integration page tracks it. The home services page shows where Messenger fits for a trades business.
Messenger is one channel of several, and the point is that they are not separate queues. See what is an AI receptionist for what answers them.
